Ms. Shoshana Cardin and Mr. Ralph Goldman, honorees at the Session |
WCJCS Tribute to Ralph Goldman at 2004 General Assembly
Two legendary and beloved Jewish communal leaders received special honors at the United Jewish Communities' General Assembly in Cleveland.
The WCJCS, in cooperation with the Jewish Communal Service Association of North America (JCSA) and the Association of Jewish Community Organization Professionals (AJCOP) paid tribute at a jam-packed G.A. morning session to Ralph Goldman, Executive Vice President Emeritus of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and Former President of the WCJCS, in honor of his 90th birthday and lifetime of service to world Jewry.
The session also honored Shoshana Cardin, who has chaired numerous major national Jewish organizations and umbrella groups.
Howard Charish of UJA-Federation of Northern Jersey (and Immediate Past President of WCJCS) and Joel Fox of the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland, opened the session by presenting the JCSA Young Professional Awards to Melanie Kohler Levav of the Marks Jewish Community House of Bensonhurst and to David Rosenberg of the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia.
As part of the tribute to Shoshana Cardin, Dr. Steven Huberman, of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, and Mark B. Terrill, of The Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore, spoke in her honor. In her response, Shoshana Cardin emphasized the important role professionals play in the development of Jewish communal life, and how rewarding she found that partnership.
At this same opportunity, AJCOP presented the Norman Edell Fellowship Award to Bari Elias of the United Jewish Fund and Council of St. Paul. The Award was presented by Rabbi Daniel Allen, President of AJCOP and Elaine Steinger, of the Jewish Federation of Des Moines.
WCJCS concluded the session with a moving tribute to Ralph Goldman, with greetings by Max Kleinman, President of WCJCS and Executive Vice President of UJC MetroWest New Jersey. Michael Schneider, Former Executive Vice President of JDC and currently its Director of Special Projects, spoke about Ralph Goldman's enormous impact on Jewish Life in Israel and around the world. Stephen Hoffman, President of the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland, focused on Ralph's vital contribution to the field of Jewish Communal Service. Ted Comet, Executive Vice President of WCJCS, presented a scroll that read: "WCJCS is honored to pay tribute on his 90 th birthday to Ralph I. Goldman, former President of the WCJCS and "Dean" of Jewish Communal Service. For over six decades he has had a historic impact on Jewish life in Israel and around the Jewish world. He has been a role model and an inspiration to his colleagues."
Ralph's response dwelt on the rewards of working in the field of Jewish communal service and having an opportunity to connect to the major developments that affect the Jewish future: post-Holocaust, establishment of the State of Israel, freeing of Soviet Jewry, Rescue of Ethiopian Jewry and Jewish Renewal in the former Communist countries.
The session was hailed a great success; we look forward to our next event at next year's G.A. – in Toronto. |
