Nonprofit Sector in Israel  
 
The Israeli Nonprofit sector is rapidly evolving from dependence on Diaspora largess to inter- and independence. While it includes organizations partially funded through overseas contributions, it is increasingly supported through Israeli sources, and is composed of a broad range of nonprofit organizations, foundations, research and training centers, and professional associations.
 

Overseas Supported Organizations

 
JDC-Israel
A unit of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, JDC-Israel engages in both capacity building for the Israeli public and nonprofit sectors, and the direct provision of social services supported in partnerships with Israeli government agencies, local communities, and indigenous funding sources. It conducts applied social research through the JDC-Brookdale Institute.
 
Jewish Agency for Israel
JAFI’s social service programs support its three core mission areas: Aliyah & Integration; Jewish-Zionist Education; and Partnerships with Israel—an initiative to address disparities in economic and geographic advantage, in order to ensure equal access to education and equal opportunity. See Partnership 2000—sponsoring cross-national community partnerships, and Youth Futures, a new volunteering initiative.
 
UJC-Israel
As a unit of the North American United Jewish Communities, UJC-Israel collaborates on such fundraising activities as the UJC’s Israel Emergency Campaign; SolidarityMissions that bring North American Jews to Israel, and coordinates with the Israel offices of local North American Federations.
 
ORT-Israel
Part of ORT’s international efforts to provide high school and college vocational training and Jewish education in Jewish communities, ORT-Israel serves more than 100,000 students in 162 institutions and partners and partners with other organization, such as JAFI and JDC provide supportive social services.
 
Keren Hayesod-United Israel Appeal
Karen Hayesod – UIA can count among its historic achievements in Israel: bringing nearly 3 million immigrants to Israel and facilitating their absorption; establishing more than 800 rural settlements in Israel; transforming 90 disadvantaged Israeli neighborhoods and development towns through Project Renewal; caring for and educating 300,000 youngsters through Youth Aliyah; bringing 175,000 young Jews from abroad to participate in "Israel Experience" programs.
 
Shatil
Established in 1982 as an empowerment and training center of the New Israel Fund, Shatil provides capacity building support to social change organizations through consultation and training on community development, coalition building, fundraising, volunteer management and working with the media.

Giving Wisely—NPO Directory
Giving Wisely is a comprehensive Internet Directory of Israeli Nonprofit and Philanthropic Organizations. The site has searchable databases to access profiles (in English) of amutot (NPO’s), foundations and hekdeshot (trusts).
 
Israeli Center for Third Sector Research
Established in 1997, Ben Gurion University’s ICTR is a primary source of information on the nonprofit sector. Conferences, research reports and policy papers are available to researchers, policy makers, professionals in the field, and interested individuals.
 
Israeli Civic Leadership Association
ICLA (formerly the Voluntary & Nonprofit Sector--VPNS) is a membership organization of nonprofit organizations. Activities include: advocacy on policy and legislative concerns; promotion of standards for quality management, transparency, and accountability; professional training; and raising public awareness of the nonprofit sector.
 
Israel Association of Community Centers
Established in 1969, IACC provides a wide range of services across Israel to meet the needs of its network that includes over 180 community centers (40 in the non-Jewish sector), with 816 branches, and more than 400 community schools. The site is in Hebrew, with a basic description in English.
 
NPO Registry (Hebrew)

The NPO Registry (Rasham Ha’Amutot) is the agency within the Ministry of Justice responsible for registry and oversight of NPO’s in Israel. The site has a searchable database of Israeli NPO’s, statistics on the sector, annual reports, and rules pertaining to NPO status within Israeli law (formation, oversight, dissolution, etc.).


   
Volunteering in Israel
The ivolunteering site is a one-stop portal to hundreds of Israel and international volunteering organizations and describes volunteering opportunities for both Israelis and visitors from abroad. Information is available in both Hebrew and English.

 
 
Academic Programs


The Hebrew University ’s Schwartz Program
provides an interdisciplinary MA degree in nonprofit management.

Ben Gurion University offers an MBA (Business School) or MA (Public Policy School) with specialization in nonprofit management.

Haifa University has an MBA with specialization in Nonprofit Management.
 

Israel Venture Philanthropy

 
Israel Venture Network

Israel Venture Network is a venture philanthropy network of high-tech entrepreneurs and business executives from Israel and the US that focuses on scalable, systemic solutions for the social, educational and employment crises that jeopardize the ability of Israel's next generation to succeed in the 21st century.


 
Tmura

Tmura - the Israel Public Service Venture Fund—receives donations of equity from (mainly private) Israeli and Israel-related high-tech companies and, upon a liquidity event, allocates the proceeds to education- and youth-related charities in Israel.


 
ELKA

The Association for the Development and Advancement of Manpower in the Social Services in Israel, was established by JDC-Israel and the Government of Israel to enhance the effectiveness of Israel's public services and nonprofit organizations by developing the management and administrative capabilities of the people who run them.


 
Ford Foundation Report

The Winter 2004 edition of FFR has an essay entitled “Civil Society: Israel's Third Sector Comes of Age”.
